3 Ways to Make Your Porcelain Veneers Last Longer

person brushing their teethAfter years of suffering through a damaged and discolored smile, it makes sense to get porcelain veneers in Bridgeville. They’re a long-lasting and costly investment for some, which makes sense why you would want to keep them looking as good as new so you can enjoy them for longer. With the proper care, you can get over 25 years out of your strong porcelain shells, as long as you’re mindful about what you’re doing with and putting in your mouth. Read on for three ways to preserve your beautiful new smile.

Keep Up With Routine Oral Hygiene

Even without veneers, your at-home oral hygiene routine is often your first line of defense against common health problems. Because your natural teeth will be prepared in order for the porcelain shells to be permanently placed, it’ll be even more important to brush and floss regularly. Here’s what you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy:

  • Brush your teeth using fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes, twice a day.
  • Floss your teeth every day.
  • Rinse your mouth with antibacterial wash regularly (if it’s too strong, try using one without alcohol in it).
  • Regulate snacking on sugary foods.
  • Substitute water for sugary energy and sports drinks.

Regularly cleaning your teeth will also keep your new porcelain veneers looking healthy and bright. It’s best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to make sure your veneers don’t wear down unnecessarily.

Be Mindful of What You Eat

While veneers are incredibly strong and durable, you’ll still want to be mindful of all the foods you chew on that could harm or damage them. Try breaking bad oral habits like nail-biting and smoking, these can cause your veneers to wear down and become discolored more quickly. You can purchase a small stress ball to carry with you if you engage in these nervous habits to try breaking them. It’s also a good idea to avoid certain foods and drinks, including:

  • Hard, sticky, and chewy candies.
  • Nuts
  • Caramel
  • Red wine
  • Coffee
  • Soy sauce
  • Tomato-based sauces
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Ice
  • Crunchy and hard bread

After you get your veneers, ask your cosmetic dentist in Bridgeville for specific additional aftercare instructions as well.

Visit Your Dentist Every Six Months

Just like with your natural teeth, you’ll need to visit your dentist every six months for checkups and cleanings. Just because your porcelain shells are covering them doesn’t mean it isn’t possible to still develop cavities and gum disease. If they spot any damage to your veneers, they can make any necessary repairs before the situation gets worse.

Just like with taking care of your natural teeth, taking care of your veneers involves most of the same precautionary measures. With great at-home and professional preventive care, you’ll be able to enjoy your new pearly whites for decades to come.
